Travel Diary || Weekend in KillarneyWednesday, April 08, 2015
Last weekend my extended family and me took a trip for my Dads 60th birthday to the beautiful little town of Killarney, Co. Kerry. My previous experience of Kerry was Kenmare (you can see that post here) and I loved the atmosphere down there so I was really looking forward to this trip to see another area.
The town of Killarney was much larger than I expected and was very bustling for the month of March. We of course did some shopping when we were there too and Killarney really has all you would ever need. For me I found a great Penneys and for my brother who has more expensive taste that me found a great Nike outlet store.
We stayed in the Brehon Hotel, which was about a five-minute drive out the road from the town centre, or on a horse and trap if you were feeling that way inclined. I fell in love with the modern design of this hotel and the free access to the hotel spa and swimming pool. I don’t think I had been swimming in an indoor pool since I was a kid so it was a great little novelty. But my favourite part to any hotel of course is the food. Thankfully this hotel didn’t disappoint. The bar food was what you would expect with chips, burgers and steak but they were done to the highest of quality separating it from your usual pub grub. I am still dreaming of that burger.
Thankfully the weather held up for the weekend and we got to do some great outdoor activities. My little niece and nephew came along too so our first port of call was an adorable petting farm outside Killarney town. It was so cute to see little deer and chickens running around, even few pugs were thrown in there too. My niece loved it but I think the adults enjoyed it even more.
Killarney has a lot of history to the place so we had to visit the most popular attraction there, Mucross House and Gardens. I have a love for Victorian history and houses so the Victorian mansion Mucross House was right up my street. Apparently Queen Victoria came to stay in the house and they were given a two-year notice to get the house ready for her. She ended up staying one night in total! Crazy but she was the queen I suppose.
One place in Killarney I didn’t get to go which I regret now was a little pub called The Shire. Yes, this is a Lord of the Rings themed pub but next time I’ll get there, my nerdy side needs to see it at least.
Overall I loved Killarney, it’s a great little place to head for a weekend away and hopefully I’ll get there again in the future to see what more it has to offer.
Have you had the chance to venture to Kerry? I would love to go back so please leave your recommendations below.
P.s. Thanks go to my Dad and my brother for the lovely photos! If you ever see good photos on the blog just know I have stolen one of their cameras.
